Fennec Members vs MemberPress

MemberPress is an all-in-one membership platform with courses, coupons and several payment gateways. Fennec Members is a free plugin that does memberships and content restriction on your own Stripe account, with no fee on member payments in any edition.

MemberPress facts checked on against MemberPress's own pages. Prices change; follow the sources for current figures.

When MemberPress is the better fit

  • Businesses that want memberships, courses, coaching and communities from one vendor, which is how MemberPress describes itself.[4]
  • Sites that need PayPal, Square or Authorize.net as well as Stripe.[1]
  • Sites that need content dripping and coupons today.[1]

Where Fennec Members differs

  • No transaction fee, ever. On a $10/month membership with 500 members, a 4.9% fee works out to $2,940 a year (500 Ă— $10 Ă— 12 Ă— 4.9%); with Fennec Members that fee is $0.
  • Levels, restriction, Stripe subscriptions, trials, upgrades with proration and failed-payment emails are all in the free plugin.
  • Restricted content is also hidden from the REST API, RSS feeds, search and comments.
  • Member data lives in your WordPress database; Stripe only sees what it needs to take payments.

What Fennec Members doesn't do (yet)

  • Stripe is the only gateway for now (PayPal is planned).
  • No content dripping or protected downloads yet; both are planned for Members Pro.
  • Courses come from Fennec Learn, which is still in early access.
  • Fennec Members is new (first stable release in October 2026) and isn’t on WordPress.org yet.

Moving from MemberPress

  1. Install Fennec Members on the same site and connect the same Stripe account MemberPress uses.
  2. Go to Fennec Members → Import (or run wp fennec-members import) and choose MemberPress.
  3. Read the dry-run report first: levels, members, Stripe subscriptions to link and content rules, plus anything with no Fennec equivalent. Nothing is written yet.
  4. Run the import. Levels, current members and content rules come across, and existing Stripe subscriptions and customers are linked, so members keep being billed without signing up again.
  5. Check a few members and restricted pages, then deactivate MemberPress when you’re happy. Re-running the import never duplicates anything.

Limits to know about

  • Subscriptions billed by a gateway other than Stripe (PayPal, for example) are imported as manual memberships that end at the paid-through date; those members re-subscribe through Stripe.
  • Expired memberships are skipped, and imports send no welcome emails.
