Fennec Members vs Paid Memberships Pro

Paid Memberships Pro and Fennec Members both have a free core that takes payments. The main differences are how Stripe is connected (PMPro’s Stripe Connect adds a 2% fee unless you have a paid license or use your own API keys) and how much of the feature set lives in add-ons.

When Paid Memberships Pro is the better fit

  • Sites that want several gateways from the free core, including PayPal and offline payments.[2][4]
  • Membership sites that need a large catalogue of add-ons, such as drip-feed series and member directories.[5][6]
  • Buyers who value a long refund window: PMPro offers a 100-day money-back guarantee.[1]

Where Fennec Members differs

  • Stripe always runs on your own API keys, so there’s no platform fee to avoid and no license needed to avoid it.
  • Trials, upgrades and downgrades with proration, and failed-payment emails that follow Stripe’s retries are in the free plugin.
  • Restricted content is also hidden from the REST API, RSS feeds, search and comments.
  • Members Pro (coupons, revenue and churn reports, team seats, member pauses) is $79/yr for 1 site or $149/yr for 5.

What Fennec Members doesn't do (yet)

  • Stripe is the only gateway for now (PayPal is planned).
  • No content dripping, member directory or protected downloads yet.
  • PMPro has a much larger add-on library and a far longer track record; Fennec Members had its first stable release in October 2026.
  • PMPro’s money-back window is longer.

Moving from Paid Memberships Pro

  1. Install Fennec Members on the same site and connect the same Stripe account PMPro uses, with your own API keys.
  2. Go to Fennec Members → Import (or run wp fennec-members import) and choose Paid Memberships Pro.
  3. Read the dry-run report first: levels, members, Stripe subscriptions to link and content rules, plus anything with no Fennec equivalent. Nothing is written yet.
  4. Run the import. Active Stripe subscriptions and customers are linked, so members keep being billed without signing up again.
  5. Check a few members and restricted pages, then deactivate PMPro when you’re happy. Re-running the import never duplicates anything.

Limits to know about

  • Members billed through another gateway, or without an active Stripe subscription, are imported as manual memberships.
  • Imports send no welcome emails.
